My New Love: Coconut Water + Green Smoothies

I’ve never liked coconut water. Honestly? It tasted like vomit to me. Gross, I know. But it did!

In the raw food world, there are lots of recipes that call for it and I’ve purchased them at the Asian grocery store and cracked them open with a butcher knife in hopes of gaining some love for them. I even bent my favorite knife doing it! But despite my efforts…no love.

And then my friend was going on and on about it…but she wasn’t drinking it plain, she was putting it in her smoothie as the liquid.

So I thought I would try it too.

Eureka! I liked it. I more than liked it…I LOVED it. It gives my smoothie a totally new taste…nothing really overpowering, just a nice overall flavor. I don’t use it every time, but if I have it on hand, it adds a twist. It also has nice health benefits like high potassium and electrolytes (great for post partum) and a bunch of other things that (according to the Internet) may or may not be true. Google it πŸ™‚

I like the kind with no sugar added (for obvious reasons) and have found it locally for 9 cents an oz. If you want to order a case (but not the same brand), check out Amazon. It appears to be well-liked and is 12 cents/oz if you do the subscribe and save option.

So for all you smoothie lovers out there, try it out! I know I’m late to the game and I’m sure some of you are already doing this, but I just had to share. Yum.

ME TOO! Love it! I happened upon this on accident when I was out of canned coconut milk one day and liked it even better. With strawberries and orange and banana it made a yummy afternoon drink that felt tropical too. I made up this today (vegan) and thought I’d share it too.
Much love and happy new baby!!!

I kinda agree, Sarah. I have been trying to drink it after running and it’s…meh. BUT I do love it in my smoothies. It just really brightened up the flavor. Maybe it was just changing up my routine, whatever it was I like it!

I’ve tried a few brands of coconut water, but our favourite is Cocofina. It is amazing in green smoothies; the tastes just seem to compliment each other. Echoing the last commenter; glad to see you’re back on here!! πŸ™‚

Sara – I’ve yet to really jump on this bandwagon. I think it’s because when we lived in Mexico and Central America – we drank coconut water…right out of the coconut. It’s weird. Wasn’t quite like ‘vomit’ taste (snort) but close enough to give me pause. Some of the stuff we’ve tried up here tastes so different, I seriously wonder how close it REALLY is to a coconut. πŸ™‚

I think sun tan will smell like a long walk on a beach, kind of like a coconut brzeee kind of scent. I am blown away by the looks of it. Last year, they could’ve done better. I think this year they’ll come back with a POW!!

Yep, tastes like vomit. That’s what I’ve thought every time I’ve tried coconut water. I make a super smoothie with spinach, pineapple, and bananas. Bet this would be a nice addition.

Feeling discouraged this morning about being my children’s teacher, so I Googled ‘un-schooling ideas’–which brought me to your lovely blog. Our boys are funny and smart and creative and outgoing….always receive compliments from others. Deep down, I know we are doing a good job. But, the the task of shaping two other humans–in addition to myself–is such a HUGE responsibility. Some days it’s stressful. Your simple, yet encouraging, post on un-schooling was just what I needed. Thank you.

    Have a great day!

I adore coconut water. I use it all the time and sometimes add it to a bowl of cereals for added flavor.

Coconuts juice are great if you drink directly from the coconut itself. I still remember the one time when I went to Rio and all the time I’ve been there I bought coconut on the beach … good times..
