My skin feels incredible now and I have no more stomach aches! πŸ™‚ Thanks so much!

  • 2. Becky  |  September 21, 2009 at 6:45 am

I loved this challenge! It felt great to fit in more veggies every day, and I looked forward to my green smoothie every morning.

  • 3. Bonny  |  September 21, 2009 at 7:16 am

This challenge has come at a great time for me! I love knowing that I’m starting my day out getting so many fruits & veggies right away. It’s the best way to start my day!

  • 4. leslie  |  September 21, 2009 at 8:45 am

I enjoyed several aspects of the challenge. It made me more motivated to get off the couch and go with my family on short walks or bike rides in the evening. I love the smoothies- that took no effort! I also really enjoyed experimenting with making homemade salad dressings all month to eat on my fresh greens πŸ™‚ I’ve worked my way up to just buying the biggest carton of organic salad greens they have at my grocery!

    Wow! A month, already?

The best thing for me was the increase in energy, and the opportunity to buy local produce. Loved that!

I did cut back on sugar and caffeine significantly. I went from one to two cups a coffee a day, to perhaps two cups a week. The unexpected side effect is that I was more alert in the mornings.

Adding the exercise has had a few good side effects too—my knees aren’t hurting as much as they were in the past, and I lost about 5 pounds. So, Wahoo for expercise!

The only thing that was tough for me was sticking with the salads after a couple of weeks. I ended up eating a lot of cooked veggies—but that still was a huge improvement for me considering how much meat my diet has contained in past years.

So, thanks Sara for the challenge—-and thanks to everyone else for the inspiration and support. You guys rock!

I did it! I got my husband to LOVE green smoothies. We even gave up coffee without even realizing it. It went so well, in fact, that we now own a Vita-Mix blender (thanks for the affiliate code Sara!)

  • 7. Tara  |  September 21, 2009 at 9:30 am

I LOVED this. It has changed my life so much for the better. I am more awake. I FEEL better. I am more regular. I have more energy. I have lost 4 pounds. I have incorporated more fruits, veggies, and salad, as well as some cooked greens, into my weekly eats. I have fed my babies, husband and friends the smoothies and have turned several people on to the green smoothie idea and have gotten rave reviews from them as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you! πŸ™‚
I have blown up one (cheap) blender, bought a new part for it, and it’s about to bite the dust again. I really, really need a vitamixer but I’m trying to make due until I can afford one because I so love my smoothies!

  • 8. Denise  |  September 21, 2009 at 9:47 am

The best thing about this challenge was that it got the whole family in the habit of having a big smoothie with our normal breakfast (even JH who is a self proclaimed fruit hater). Every morning the kids ask “What’s in our smoothie this morning?” It’s been an awesome way to get fruits and veggies into my picky little Kindergartener and knowing she’s starting her day off right πŸ™‚

  • 9. laurel Sauls  |  September 21, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Well, this month the impossible happened. My junk food loving hubby FINALLY agreed to try a smoothie at the beginning of the 30 day challenge after I promised him that it was definitely NOT good for him *haha*. Last night, he came in the kitchen as I was making a smoothie and said “ooooh, yum. Did you make enough for me?!” It is a miracle!!! He now looks forward to his daily smoothie. I never thought it would happen! Of course, my boys love them too. Thanks, Sara!

  • 10. Heather  |  September 21, 2009 at 12:30 pm

I just felt better after doing this challenge. At first it was a little much because of the detox that came with the green smoothies, but I feel a lot healthier. Matt also loved it. It was nice to hear him say to me this weekend “I really like the green smoothies, I think we should keep doing this.” That made it worth it to me πŸ™‚

    • 11. Anne Lawrie  |  September 21, 2009 at 1:51 pm

I haven’t finished the full month yet because I started late, but I’m feeling great. I had some days when I felt exhausted, but those have passed. I’ve lost a few pounds that had been refusing to leave my body. I’m in the midst of reading Dr. Doug Graham’s 80, 10, 10 Diet and rethinking the way I’ve eaten raw in the past. Heath-wise things are great!

  • 12. Shannon  |  September 21, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Green smoothies have given me more energy than coffee. I really can’t get enough of them. I could drink them all day. My 6-year-old son likes them, too, as long as I put it in a cup where he can’t see the color.

  • 13. Nichole Alvarado  |  September 21, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Though the challenge is over, I am going to keep drinking green smoothies every day. This challenge was exactly what I needed. After I had my son (Sept. 08) I couldn’t keep myself disciplined to eat well and exercise. This affected my confidence, energy and overall emotions. In just thirty days (wow!!!) I lost 10 lbs, mastered my cravings for sugar and started training for running races again…I just completed my first 5k this past weekend. People keep asking me if I’m pregnant because I’m full of energy, my skin is clearer and my attitude is so relaxed and positive! Green smoothies have really impacted my life!!!!!! Thanks Sara for opening this up to me!!!

  • 14. deborah  |  September 21, 2009 at 1:52 pm

well i have actually been doing your green smoothie challenges for a couple years now. this year was great b/c we bought a vita mix last november and so we can make our smoothies ea morning instead of a night. they taste much fresher and i am much more excited about them. we drink our smoothies for lunch since it is a bit much for me in the morning. we drink less coffee and don’t need it right when we wake up. i think the hard thing for us is actually the detox. we haven’t eaten meat, white sugar, white flour, etc in months/years but i had already decided that for sept we would give up dairy and significantly cut back our wheat. i would love to say we are finshed detoxing–but that just hasn’t happened. lucky for us we already were drinking smoothies and having this challenge helped us be that much more intentional and aware of them.
i love your blog sara! you have been such an encouragement to me to do more research over the last couple years and to question the info given to the public. thank you!

  • 15. findingtrueserenity  |  September 21, 2009 at 2:08 pm

The best part about the green smoothies is that the kids and I discovered that we love, and I do mean LOVE our chocolate smoothie! The kids actually request it without any prompting! Ontop of drinking something together that is a wonderful treat, it is so comforting knowing that I’m adding extra vegetables and now the kids are talking about the “news” to the neighbor kids!

  • 16. Jackie H  |  September 21, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I think drinking the smoothies before our lunch as really helped to set the mood for healthier eating and for hubby and I, we’ve used it to fill up on fruits and veg before even eating our lunch, so we’ve been eating less (one of my goals!). We were drinking if after the meal and feeling soo full – then we realized we were doing it backwards! And the kids love guessing what color the smoothie will end up before I blend it all up. πŸ™‚

  • 17. Rebekah  |  September 21, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Wow, this challenge has been great! I lost about 8lbs, we’re off refined sugar and full on embracing raw sugar and green smoothies everyday. We are going to continue drinking green smoothies everyday! My skin, hair and nails are shiny and strong. My acne is gone. And I have no sugar cravings!!! Yippe!

  • 18. Katherine  |  September 21, 2009 at 3:42 pm

This was just the thing my family needed to get us into gear! My husband, who is notorious for being picky when it comes to food, LOVES the green smoothies and we’ve decided to keep this as a regular part of a healthy diet. On top of knowing that we were getting our fruits and veggies each day, I definitely noticed that it curbed the cravings for junk food that I used to have! I’m so glad I found out about this challenge! Thank you!!

  • 19. Nadia  |  September 21, 2009 at 4:22 pm

LOVED IT!!!!!! I feel soooo much better now. Last month at this time, I was tired, achy, bloaty, and had terrible skin and my hormones were all over the place. I have faithfully drank my green smoothy every morning for the last month and the change that I can see if my self is incredible! 10.5 pounds gone! Mood swings, gone! Coffee, gone!! My skin looks awesome! I am so thankful that I came across your site when I did! Thanks Sara!

  • 20. Jenny  |  September 21, 2009 at 8:46 pm

I actually finished this challenge with having had a smoothie every day. I went into it fearful of even trying it, skeptical I’d like it and convinced my blender would kill it for me. My cheap blender is still going and I have a new habit….I can’t start my day without one. With being 8 months pregnant, this smoothie has given me an extra method of getting as much fruit & veggies in my system as possible. Maybe someday I might even get my kids and husband to try it, but for now I’ll just roll with it. Thx

  • 21. jennifer rowntree  |  September 21, 2009 at 8:58 pm

every morning i wake up looking forward to making a smoothie. I actually stopped drinking coffee! I didn’t stop on purpose but instead I just didn’t crave it anymore. Instead I crave my yummy green smoothies, especially now that I just got my vitamix the other day πŸ™‚ thanks sara for the inspiration! you’re the best!

  • 22. Donn  |  September 21, 2009 at 9:10 pm

As an older woman I needed to lose some mid-life weight although I am a longtime vegetarian. I found that a green/berry smoothie for lunch and a salad for supper really helped to kick-start that process. Getting off refined sugar was the best part though…thanks for that!

Now that I’ve lost 8 lbs and exercising more, I’ve added more whole grains and legumes back into my diet. I find that I can’t digest raw greens so I’m steaming my kale, Swiss Chard, and spinach now; Dr. Weil says that when greens are cooked, the nutrients are absorbed better. It works for me!

  • 23. Menden @ Skinny Menny  |  September 21, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I didn’t even realize the month had passed already…it went by so quickly!

I truly enjoyed this challenge. Although I didn’t post the green smoothie on my blog every day, I did actually have at least one each day except for two weekend days when I was out of town and away from a blender.

I love the feeling of knowing that I’ve started off my day with all of those rich nutrients and healthy goodness. I used to think a “smoothie” was only tasty when it was made with dairy products and/or sweeteners, but quickly began to enjoy the green smoothies in their “natural” state with this challenge!

Because I noticed positive changes in my skin and digestion right away after starting the green smoothie challenge, I also started “preaching” to my friends…who also joined in on the challenge! One friend, in particular, has had various digestive problems, and noticed a marked improvement after incorporating a green smoothie into her daily routine.

Thanks for making this a fun challenge – and for posting videos with your tips and tricks. Your suggestions for acrylic / reusable straws were a big hit on my blog πŸ™‚ I think I’ll definitely be keeping green smoothies as a regular part of my daily diet, particularly when I’m looking for a quick breakfast that I can blend up and take on the road for my commute. Thanks again – I feel great! πŸ˜€

  • 24. Mandy  |  September 21, 2009 at 10:23 pm

This has been the best thing I’ve done for myself in such a long time. My cravings for sweets and white flour has dissolved. I have so much more energy. I lost 15 lbs this last month. Weight that would not come off before. I changed my relationship with food, not focused so much on eating all the time, but eating more to nourish myself than out of habit or addiction. I had some major family illness this past week and really credit this to being able to hold strong and stay focused to help start make it through. Thank you!!!

  • 25. Michelle  |  September 21, 2009 at 11:21 pm

We’re loving the green smoothies! Was able to get my whole family on-boardβ€”and am even exchanging a quart of green smoothie a day for a quart of goat’s milk with a neighbor friend.

  • 26. Sue  |  September 22, 2009 at 12:59 am

Well the first week was great. Then my blender burned out. 😦 I didn’t have any opportunity to get another. So I ate the fruit and bought the BIG bag of quinoa at Costco and put raw spinach in everything. Much fun!

  • 27. Talia  |  September 22, 2009 at 1:02 am

I’ve almost forgotten about the challenge! It’s seriously just become my routine now- and I love it! I definitely won’t be stopping after just 30 short days!

Green smoothies pretty well forever now!

  • 28. freshfloralart  |  September 22, 2009 at 8:06 am

Let me just say that it really has changed my life! I have lost about 15 pounds, my milk supply has increased, my energy is high, people have noticed that I feel better. Everyone in our house is drinking them and it has generally made us rethink everything we eat. Thank you so much for promoting and sharing with us on your blog.
And just yesterday my 9 month old tested very high on her iron test, which was huge for me since I have always had low iron and have had to use supplements with the little ones. I honestly believe the greens/orange combination makes a difference!

  • 29. Candyce  |  September 22, 2009 at 8:33 am

The challenge made me reevaluate our grocery budget. I’d been shying away from fresh fruit and vegetables, thinking it was cheaper to purchase prepackaged items. I realized, however, that it isn’t very much more expensive, especially when it comes to the health benefits, and we’ve shed several pounds in the process (so far, I’m down 16 lbs, and I believe my husband has lost about 12).

  • 30. Stephanie  |  September 22, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Thanks so much for doing the challenge! I think the biggest change for me was that I didn’t crave junk food and sometimes I just didn’t want it. I had a mixed drink one night (of course made with the sugary fake fruit stuff) and I could not stand the taste! I needed the real thing. πŸ™‚ I have had more energy and feel up to beat how I should be. I would absolutely love this book as a follow up to encourage me in continuing the smoothies. smiles. πŸ™‚

  • 31. LaniQ  |  September 22, 2009 at 1:13 pm

I did not have a smoothie every day of the challenge, I found your site after it began, but I have been having them often, and I have been amazed because I really do have more energy. Also, after watching your Q and A session I was so encouraged when you said to think about it as adding good stuff into your diet instead of the mindset of what do I have to get rid of. I have been challenging myself to add as many veggies into a meal as I can, and it has been so fun! My kids are loving it, we are trying something new each week, and I have actually started craving fruits and veggies instead of sugar and salt!! I am loving this new mindset, and am feeling better physically because of it. So thank you for the inspiration and all the info that you share.

  • 32. Allie  |  September 22, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I can tell a difference in my energy level on days when I drink a green smoothie. Also, my husband and 3 kids have enjoyed smoothies for breakfast. It’s an easy way to make baby food and feed the family a healthy breakfast at the same time.

  • 33. Heidi  |  September 22, 2009 at 6:58 pm

The smoothies have been and continue to be just Amazing! I can’t believe it’s has been a month already. It was a great challenge and a great lifestyle change for me! It has been a lot of fun to try new fruit that I probably would have just passed by normally but picked up a little to try in the smoothies and found so much more I love! Thanks Sara!

  • 34. Daniele  |  September 23, 2009 at 6:19 am

LOVED this challenge, thank you so very much!!! My skin feels and looks better, I have more energy and just love knowing that I’m getting more veggies & fruits into my diet has been great! I’m hooked and will continue.

  • 35. Carrie  |  September 23, 2009 at 7:12 am

Well, the challenge was exactly that, challenging! On the days when I actually had what I needed to make the smoothies, they were great. I love the way they make me feel. But they were not something I was able to do every day. I will be trying to make it a more regular part of my routine from here on out. Thanks for the start, though.

  • 36. chandra  |  September 23, 2009 at 8:22 am

I started on the 15th…I’m a little late to the game. I’m loving the smoothies. Who would have thought you could put an enormous amount of spinach in a blender and mix with fruit and it not taste like a salad. I love salads but not in the AM. I can’t wait to see the difference a month will make.

  • 37. Myra  |  September 23, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Thought this challenge was going to take too much time with crazy busy schedule…but I’m trying to straigten things out each and every day. The smooties aid in that process. There is a sense of accomplishment when I’ve prepared and take the time to drink the smoothie and start my day feeling good on the inside and on the outside. Every day is a new day…and for some reason this challenge has really put that into perspective. I need to educate myself a bit more on other recipes and raw foods. I need to head to the library! Thanks again for opening my eyes!

  • 38. Susan  |  September 24, 2009 at 10:59 am

I absolutely LOVE green smoothies!! My morning doesn’t seem complete without one. I’m not sure if I’ll be drinking them in the winter, but for now, I’m hooked!!

  • 39. Chantal  |  September 24, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Being pregnant and having had iron issues with both my other pregnancies I was eager to try this challenge to see how it affected my iron/energy levels. I have to say that is has helped a lot. My midwife did a blood test today so I will only get the results back in a few weeks. But I don’t feel as tired. I love that I am getting in all my fruit and veggie servings (more even). Before I started this challenge I didn’t always do that. My hair looks better. My skin looks better. I am not sure if this is the smoothie of the pregnancy, but I am loving it no matter what. And I don’t plan on stopping!

  • 40. Andrea  |  September 24, 2009 at 2:02 pm

The benefits began immediately. My skin has improved, I have more energy, I don’t crave pasta, and I am sleeping better.

Thank you for posting the challenge.

  • 41. debbie bailey  |  September 24, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Two things I noticed right away after drinking green smoothies for a few days; more energy and a decrease in my desire to eat sugar. My children love them. I’m definitely a convert for life!

  • 42. Rebekah Leger  |  September 25, 2009 at 12:37 pm

The green smoothies taught me a very important lesson about my body. I began to get dizzy after drinking them, a feeling I felt also after eating a lot of sweets. I did some internet searching and figured out that (perhaps) the overload of sugar (whether natural or processed) was causing my dizziness – maybe my blood pressure was lowering for some reason.

Well, I don’t have it all figured out – but I did adopt a new mantra, “protein first and always.” So before drinking my smoothie, I eat either a boiled egg or a handful of nuts. It seems to be working.

This searching also led me to find out that when I eat high carb meals in the evening, it may be leading to the tossing and turning and sweating I do at night. This is a huge discovery. So I no longer eat big carb-laden meals for dinner.

This challenge also led us to sign up for a Sams membership, where we save $$ on the frozen fruit!

We have passed our 30 days and are still going. Smoothies every day. Thanks for introducing me to them!

    • 43. A Taylor  |  May 12, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Wow! I just googled “green smoothie dizzy” and this is what came up. I also get dizzy when drinking green smoothies – what is strange though is I put a scoop of soy protein powder in there too – but still got dizzy. I’ll try the nut/egg trick.

I also toss and turn and get night sweats after eating carbs for dinner. I have found that a light meal consisting of a soft boiled egg and steamed spinach works wonders…. it’s just a matter of getting in the habit of eating more during the day and light in the evening.

Thanks for your post – as I am sure it will help!

  • 44. Claire  |  September 26, 2009 at 10:36 am

Thanks for the challenge! It was, well, challenging! (especially the sugar part!). It was an introduction to green smoothies for me, though, and I love them (even though I am still saving up for a blender – I only have a handed-down food processor!). My two year old daughter eats her green smoothies as popsicles!

  • 45. Unsinkable Kristen  |  September 27, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Well, I joined about 3/4 through so I’m behind everyone, but so far I am LOVING it. I’ve started to CRAVE my smoothie everyday. I have one giant one for lunch everyday, it’s been perfect because I don’t spend the afternoon snacking then, and when dinnertime rolls around all I want is something good and fresh. I’m not as consistent with everything else, but I’m working on it πŸ™‚ I plan to wrap this up on a high note!

  • 46. Debbie  |  September 27, 2009 at 11:44 pm

Hi, What a fantastic challenge. My hubby even went and bought me a new blender. I was taking my smoothies to work, I work in a hospital, and was amazed at how many people said how horrible it looked. When I said it tastes really good they didn’t believe me. I did find that one day I had too many greens and not enough berries and it was a bit bitter. I went to the local market on closing and was even given surpless supplies of greens which made it a little cheaper. I was a huge lollie eater and found when ever I craved something sweet, I would have a few mouthfulls of the smoothie. Drinking through a straw is fun. I was dissapointed that I didn’t loose weight though, at first I did but then it came back. I will certainly continue making the smoothies.

  • 47. Dawn  |  September 30, 2009 at 9:46 pm

I know I’m too late for the give-away, but I still wanted to share…

Is it possible that regularly drinking green smoothies makes my singing voice better? πŸ™‚ I sing a lot, throughout my day, but specifically in my church choir I’ve noticed a difference. It is easier to find the pitch and stay in tune when I have faithfully drunk my smoothies. I feel like my throat feels better and my voice is clearer and more effortless.

I guess that goes to show, they are good for EVERY part of your life! πŸ™‚

  • 48. Karl  |  September 20, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Im so happy some other people have been getting dizzy from green smoothies, i thought it was just me. Ive just started drinking one as i write this and already my head has gone a bit fuzzy/dizzy. My smoothies are of the savory variety so i dont think its a sugar overload or anything in my case. Im going to do a 7 day smoothie fast next week, god knows how im going to feel!

"It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet." -Margaret Mead

"I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open and put them on cholesterol lowering drugs for the rest of their lives." - Dean Ornish, MD
