Carry Chia!

We stayed at a hotel with my parents recently…and I knew the only thing I would want to eat at their restaurant would be fruit. So I kicked it up a notch and brought a little baggie of chia with me. I asked the waiter for a glass of water without ice, dumped in the chia seeds, stirred and waited. In about 10 minutes, I had a nutritious breakfast packed with vitamins and goodness. I dumped it into a bowl, added some fruit and honey to the top and I was a happy girl!!

Don’t get discouraged when you’re traveling…CARRY CHIA!

*That little baggie behind my chia is my baggie of tea…a girl has GOT to have good tea on the road! Yum.

    I linked to one of my faves in the post…Rishi Citron Oolong. I also like flowery/fruity green teas (i.e. Boulder Blues) and a good vanilla rooibos makes me happy…along with Evening in Missoula.

    That is an awesome idea. Seriously, I need your genius. I have 5lbs of chia (minus what we have scarfed in the last week) and never thought to bring it our with me, DUH!

    I’m wondering if I am allowed to take chia seeds along on international flights & through customs to europe- do you know? (or know where I could find the answer- I’ve tried searching the web, but haven’t come up with an answer). Any help from Sara or blog readers would be so appreciated!

    I’ve been wondering this for a while, so I guess I’ll just ask. If I look up Chia nutrition facts, it says that 1 oz has 18% calcium. That is a decent amount, but not 5x the amount of milk. I’ve seen it on some site promoting chia that it is 5x, but how do you really know? I gave up dairy a few months ago, and I’m nursing. I’m also planning on getting pregnant soon. Nursing and pregnant – I want to be sure I have enough calcium. Chia seems like a great way, but who’s right? 5x the amount of milk or 18% DV?

    Also, if you put it in baked goods, do you just put in the chia gel or the dry seeds?

    Erin…I never trust the numbers that the FDA puts out, but you have to remember that the absorption of calcium from dairy is not nearly as high as something like chia.

    I do take a calcium supplement (Vitamin Code – Raw Calcium) and eat raw goat’s milk cheese. Leafy greens are also an EXCELLENT source of calcium. If you are concerned, I would just get tested for deficiency. That’s really the only way to know.

    I’ve never baked with chia, but I’m sure it will tell you in the various recipes.

    so what exactly IS chia?? do you add it to stuff, ?? is it like a regular seed that you could grind to a butter? this is the 2nd time i have read about chia today. i have amazon prime right now..thinking i should pick some up. any other things i should pick up b4 my amazon prime runs out?? lol. i need to get the eating back to ‘clean.’ need ez stuff though
