I love when I stumble across a new fabulous foody website! Check out this great vegetarian/vegan/raw site…YumUniverse. One of the contributors, Heather, is a fellow hooper and blogger. Love it.

I will definitely be trying these bad boys and this will be going in a nori roll SOON! Oooh la la.

The Joy of Discovery

My friend Denise is just in the wonderful beginning stages of the vegan diet and she made the sweetest video about her discoveries. I love how excited she is about the greens! I wanted to share it with you…

Do check out the cookbook she is referring to, The Kind Diet. I’ve thumbed through it and it’s great! Definitely on my list of must have cookbooks.

We Like It Raw: My Way & More

We Like It Raw is a wonderful community of raw food enthusiasts…and I have talked about them before on my blog. I wanted to highlight one of their newer features, “My Way“. If you’re like me, you love to peek into other people’s lives and eating habits. My Way gives you a chance to do just that.

There are other sections of WLIW that I LOVE:

Foody Blog Love

I am constantly encouraged and entertained by reading blogs. It’s so fun to walk alongside someone in their journey…even though I don’t even know them personally, and come away feeling refreshed and energized! Here are some that I am enjoying lately:

Heather Eats Almond Butter: Love this one. Heather eats a variety of foods and has a great story behind it all. She’s funny, cute, and she loves almond butter as much as I do πŸ™‚

Choosing Raw: Good stuff here…yummy recipes and tons of information/FAQ on the raw diet.

Radical Radiance: Courtney lives and works at Tree of Life in Patagonia, AZ…one of the many places I want to visit someday! Her blog always has great food photos, and she’s very open and honest about her journey with raw. Love it.

Extreme Diets: Not a blog, but something fun. I’m so sad that I missed this re-airing last night, but there is another one on the 29th. Tivo it if you’re not up in the early hours of the morning πŸ™‚ It looks like a fun show…with one of the participants being a raw food chef. I can’t pass that up!

Women Go Raw: A month-long west coast tour (started on 9/1) with some big names in the raw movement. Sign up on their blog for updates. There is also a fun little video of their eco-RV they are traveling in. And you know how I love RV’s! πŸ™‚

One Week Down!

One week down…three to go! Congratulations to all of you who are participating in the Green Smoothie Challenge of 2009! I’ve been hearing great things from the trenches…weight loss, increased energy and clarity, and kids joining in! Great things are happening…because of green smoothies πŸ™‚ Keep it up!

After the first week, you have probably started to figure out where your weaknesses are. Focus on those this week and overcome them. For some of you, it’s the no sugar thing. Continue to cut them out of your diet, and have a “plan” for those times that you do crave them. Don’t just stand there helplessly…FIGHT those cravings! First of all, if you still have candy and soft drinks in the house…GET RID OF IT! Give it away to your friends who don’t want to be healthy! If it’s there, you will eat it. Don’t kid yourself. I find that a cup of hot tea works wonders, or even just drinking a big glass of water. You can also fill that craving with a sweet fruit like watermelon or berries. The less sugar you consume, the less you will crave it.

For some of you, it’s the exercise thing. You just cannot find time to fit it in no matter what you do. But I guarantee you that you will find time for things that you are passionate about…whether it be keeping up with friends and family on Facebook, sewing/knitting, reading, watching TV, etc. Look at your day and figure out where your time is spent…and then carve out 15 minutes of that time to BE ACTIVE. Go outside and walk around the block 4 times. Do some stretching before you go to bed at night. Start small, document your journey, and keep moving forward.

Even if this first week was really hard and you only did one smoothie all week, go into this second week with renewed determination. Be gentle on yourself, but stick to the challenge.Β  It’s worth it!

who is due with her 8th baby TODAY!
Can’t wait to hear the big news Heth!

What I’m Loving Right Now

  • I’m loving the green juice. I make it a game…to see how many greens I can juice and have it still taste yummy πŸ™‚ Yesterday I juiced an entire head of kale and an entire head of romaine + apple + ginger + lemon…and it was soooo addicting. My favorite part of juicing is pushing the food down with the plunger thingy. Apple…WHAM! Kale…WHAM! Lemon…WHAM!! That’s some real fun.
  • Here is why I love Jason Mraz: He has a raw food chef making him food on tour. This video totally cracks me up…mostly because Anya Marina (she toured with him) is a total goof ball. Fair warning…she does say a naughty word πŸ™‚ Don’t have the sound up at work or watch this with children. Her entire tour documentary is hilarious.
  • I came across another fun site, Real-time news from Raw Food blogs, forums, and mainstream media. It’s one stop shopping for a ton of raw blogs and other good stuff. I’ve discovered lots of raw blogs that I didn’t know about before. New inspiriation! Love it.

What are you loving right now?

Renegade Health Call with Ritamarie Loscalzo

Tonight I’ve been listening to this call with Ritamarie Loscalzo and I wanted to share it with you. She really knows her stuff and it’s an extremely informational call. She talks about TONS of topics…many of which are common questions that everyone has (especially when going raw). Some of the things she discusses with Kevin:

  • Agave and whether or not it’s a good thing
  • Water treatment / filteration
  • Green smoothies as a detoxification route
  • Vaccinations
  • More!

If you’re interested, be sure to go listen within the next 24 hours (it’s only available for that long unless you’re part of the Renegade Health Inner Circle). You can also check out Ritamarie’s site here.

One thing in the call that I am really interested in is a website she recommended called “Direct Labs“.Β  I’ve been wanting to get my blood levels tested after I’ve been eating raw for awhile so that I can focus on my deficiencies…and this will allow me to take control of that without having to go into a doctor. I’m so excited! She also talks about an essential fatty acids test that I’m interested as well. I sound like an advertisement for her … but I can assure you I don’t get anything for promoting this! πŸ™‚ I just think it’s a great call!! If you want to get notified about these calls and other good stuff…sign up for Kevin and Annmarie’s emails.

Enjoy the call!

Stay Encouraged

One of the best ways to maintain excitment about getting healthy and staying on track is to fill your mind with encouragement. I’m so thankful for the blogosphere in that respect…I am able to “meet” up with those encouragers on a daily basis and get recharged! Here are two of my favorites right now:

The Renegade Health Show – Kevin and Annmarie
Kevin and Annmarie are so genuine, knowledgeable, and funny πŸ™‚ I love watching their rhTV show every day and seeing what kind of craziness they have been up to. Their shows are extremely varied in topic, and always informational. My favorite guest on their show lately is this fabulous blonde woman named Solla. Be sure to check her out on today’s show…she’s so great! She’s also in many of Matt Monarch’s videos (see below) as well…because she was one of the raw chefs for his wedding.

I know for a fact that Kevin and Annmarie are the real deal…because we’ve met them! They bought our RV and are using it on their nationwide tour right now. It has affectionately been nicknamed “The Kale Whale”. They will often air their show from the inside of the RV, so you might recognize some things! We spent a day with them in Bozeman (teaching them how to run the RV) and can’t wait to see them again. They are truly inspiring.

I would highly recommend Kevin’s new book, “High Raw“. It’s what launched me back into my raw-ness after Lucy was born. I love Kevin’s approach…and this book can help you no matter where you are in your journey. He dispels so many myths about eating raw and the book is full of great info. Right now he is giving away the eBook for FREE!! So get over there and download it. I also bought the “hard copy” and have already loaned it out to my dad!

Raw Food World – Matt and Angela
I’ve followed Matt’s blog for awhile, but just recently started watching his videos on a regular basis. He just married Angela Stokes over the weekend…and in the process hosted a fabulous raw festival as well! Their videos are entertaining and informative…they always interview interesting people! His hair is crazy out of control as well…I love it πŸ™‚ Both Matt and Angela have really neat stories about coming to raw food.

Check them out and stay encouraged!

Gotta Love Renee

One of my favorite documentaries is Go Further, featuring Woody Harreleson and his friends as they bike down the West coast spreading the word about “simple organic living”. Well, actually Woody and a few friends bike it, and the rest of them ride in a sweet bus and eat raw foods. In fact, I do believe that this movie was what got me interested in raw foods initially! If you haven’t seen it, add it to your Netflix TODAY! It’s such a wonderful, quirky look at all things environmental, as well as food related issues. I have the book too, which I love. πŸ™‚ Check it out…

“GO FURTHER”, the new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Ron Mann, explores the idea that the single individual is the key to large-scale transformational change.

The film follows actor Woody Harrelson as he takes a small group of friends on a bio-fuelled bus-ride down the Pacific Coast Highway. Their goal? To show the people they encounter that there are viable alternatives to our habitual, environmentally-destructive behaviors.

The travelers include a yoga-teacher, a raw food chef, a hemp-activist, a junk-food addict, and a college student who suspends her life to impulsively hop aboard. We see the hostility these pilgrims encounter, and watch as their ideas are challenged from within and without.

We meet an entrepreneur who runs a paper company that does not harm trees; an organic farmer who believes Nature is his partner; a man who teaches environmental activists to use humor as a strategic weapon. And throughout, we see Harrelson test his belief that the transformation of our planet begins with the small personal transformations that are within the grasp of each and every one of us, after which… we’ll go further.

Go Further introduced me to Renee Loux Underkoffler for the first time. She goes along for the journey…riding on the bus, and is their personal raw food chef. Yay! She is so enthusiastic and amazing…she is someone you just know you’d love being around!

She has a GREAT cookbook, Living Cuisine: The Art and Spirit of Raw Foods…it holds the recipe for the Balsamic Vinagriette that everyone loves! The Amazon reviews speak for themselves…it’s just really, really good food. The entire first half of the cookbook is informational…about living foods and also food/nutritional info. There is a little sampling of her recipes on the follow up website to Go Further (Voice Yourself)…it has several of the recipes featured in the film, such as Painted Fruit and Chocolate Mousse of the Gods. Yum!

Here is her website, Euphoric Organics, which has a lot of really useful info. And here is a little video of her making Raspberry Lavender Lemonade. She has two other books, The Balanced Plate and Easy Green Living. You just gotta love Renee!

Words to Eat By

"It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet." -Margaret Mead

"I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open and put them on cholesterol lowering drugs for the rest of their lives." - Dean Ornish, MD

β€œFinish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
