Renegade Health Call with Ritamarie Loscalzo

Tonight I’ve been listening to this call with Ritamarie Loscalzo and I wanted to share it with you. She really knows her stuff and it’s an extremely informational call. She talks about TONS of topics…many of which are common questions that everyone has (especially when going raw). Some of the things she discusses with Kevin:

  • Agave and whether or not it’s a good thing
  • Water treatment / filteration
  • Green smoothies as a detoxification route
  • Vaccinations
  • More!

If you’re interested, be sure to go listen within the next 24 hours (it’s only available for that long unless you’re part of the Renegade Health Inner Circle). You can also check out Ritamarie’s site here.

One thing in the call that I am really interested in is a website she recommended called “Direct Labs“.Β  I’ve been wanting to get my blood levels tested after I’ve been eating raw for awhile so that I can focus on my deficiencies…and this will allow me to take control of that without having to go into a doctor. I’m so excited! She also talks about an essential fatty acids test that I’m interested as well. I sound like an advertisement for her … but I can assure you I don’t get anything for promoting this! πŸ™‚ I just think it’s a great call!! If you want to get notified about these calls and other good stuff…sign up for Kevin and Annmarie’s emails.

Enjoy the call!

Stay Encouraged

One of the best ways to maintain excitment about getting healthy and staying on track is to fill your mind with encouragement. I’m so thankful for the blogosphere in that respect…I am able to “meet” up with those encouragers on a daily basis and get recharged! Here are two of my favorites right now:

The Renegade Health Show – Kevin and Annmarie
Kevin and Annmarie are so genuine, knowledgeable, and funny πŸ™‚ I love watching their rhTV show every day and seeing what kind of craziness they have been up to. Their shows are extremely varied in topic, and always informational. My favorite guest on their show lately is this fabulous blonde woman named Solla. Be sure to check her out on today’s show…she’s so great! She’s also in many of Matt Monarch’s videos (see below) as well…because she was one of the raw chefs for his wedding.

I know for a fact that Kevin and Annmarie are the real deal…because we’ve met them! They bought our RV and are using it on their nationwide tour right now. It has affectionately been nicknamed “The Kale Whale”. They will often air their show from the inside of the RV, so you might recognize some things! We spent a day with them in Bozeman (teaching them how to run the RV) and can’t wait to see them again. They are truly inspiring.

I would highly recommend Kevin’s new book, “High Raw“. It’s what launched me back into my raw-ness after Lucy was born. I love Kevin’s approach…and this book can help you no matter where you are in your journey. He dispels so many myths about eating raw and the book is full of great info. Right now he is giving away the eBook for FREE!! So get over there and download it. I also bought the “hard copy” and have already loaned it out to my dad!

Raw Food World – Matt and Angela
I’ve followed Matt’s blog for awhile, but just recently started watching his videos on a regular basis. He just married Angela Stokes over the weekend…and in the process hosted a fabulous raw festival as well! Their videos are entertaining and informative…they always interview interesting people! His hair is crazy out of control as well…I love it πŸ™‚ Both Matt and Angela have really neat stories about coming to raw food.

Check them out and stay encouraged!

Healthy Changes

I’m back! Lucy has arrived, and I’m ready to start eating a high raw diet again! It was so challenging while I was pregnant…because greens were really NOT appealing to me at all until the 3rd trimester. But now…I’ve been loving drinking my entire quart of green smoothie in the morning…woo!! It feels great to be eating less breads/carbs.

I’m not concerned with being super strict right now. In fact, being too strict is my downfall with the raw diet. I am just aiming to eat as much raw as I can all day. What does that look like? I start out with 1 quart of green smoothie. For lunch, I’ll make a huge salad with nuts, hemp seeds, avocado, etc. I snack throughout the day on watermelon, apples, berries, nuts, etc. I’m hoping to get a dehydrator so I can start making flax crackers, raw pizza, and raw burgers again. Yay! For supper, we will usually have a low-fat vegan meal. Right now, our favorite is roasted asparagus, sweet potato and red pepper over herbed quinoa. So yummy! We are not totally vegan because we do eat farm fresh eggs from a local farm. My main goal is to eat as many greens as I can all day…greens = good milk production for nursing (think about the cows!). I should add that Matt is joining me in the raw food goodness as well πŸ™‚ It’s always helpful when your spouse or significant other is on board with your foody adventures.

Eating cleaner helps me to feel so much more “clear” and I have a lot more energy. I cut out dairy in my 3rd trimester, and have continued that now. Dairy is a common allergen, especially in breastfed babies…and it’s just not that great for my body either. I feel good without it! I’m also cutting out as much processed soy as possible. Processed soy includes soy milk, tofu, etc. We’ve switched to homemade almond milk (or prepared almond milk, depending on how I’m feeling!).

This week’s raw meal line up includees: walnut tacos, pad thai, caesar salad, collard wraps, and more! The most common question I get from readers is what my favorite green smoothie is. So, here it is:

  • 1 cup of fresh pineapple
  • Frozen fruit (I buy the Spectrum blend from Costco)
  • 1 peeled orange
  • 2 frozen bananas (I freeze with peel and then soak in warm water for a minute to get the peel off)
  • Filtered water to blend
  • Organic baby spinach (Costco has the best deal by far!)

So there it is…the totally random update on eating and life. Be sure to check out the next post about the Raw Mom Summit. I’m super excited to listen to those calls! Have a healthy day…

Raw Food and Pregnancy

*Edited to add: I forget that some of you may not read my other blogs, and may not even know that I’m pregnant πŸ™‚ So…surprise! I’m pregnant! Due in late May/early June.*

Hello fellow foodies!
Several of you have commented or emailed asking questions about the raw food diet during pregnancy and if I would continue. I have been VERY nauseous during the first trimester, and unfortunately, most raw foods made me want to run in the opposite direction! πŸ™‚ Including green smoothies. It was very frustrating because I knew my body needed it, but it would reject it every time. Now that I’m in my 13th week…the fog has lifted a bit, and I am able to start adding back my favorite raw foods. It’s amazing to me that just a few weeks ago, a big salad turned my stomach, and today I devoured an entire head of kale. I will slowly be adding back smoothies, as my stomach allows.

I have done research on eating a completely raw diet during pregnancy, with wonderful results. If you aren’t familiar with Jinjee and her raw pregnancies, defintely check out her site/eBook. It’s well worth the read. For me personally, I’m currently eating a mostly vegan diet with as much raw as I can. When I say “mostly vegan”, I don’t mean that I’m eating meat, but that I am eating eggs and occasionally organic cheese. For milk, we use soy or almond milk. I will continue to up my greens daily…I see so much value in greens during pregnancy and know that it will keep my iron levels and energy up. My main goal is to eat a varied diet of many colors, with as much raw as possible and I am comfortable with that. I also take Rainbow Light “Complete Prenatal System” vitamins, along with fish oils, and some grapefruit seed extract for yeast prevention, etc.

This blog will naturally gravitate back towards healthy vegan/vegetarian fare, and I will post new yummy recipes as I find them πŸ™‚ Have a Happy Foody day!

Terra Bella Cafe

L.A. is well-known as one of the premiere raw food “hot spots”…and while we were there in May, I wanted to experience all the raw goodness that I could. I had picked up the Spring ’08 copy of “Get Fresh“…a raw magazine that just happened to have an article titled “Raw Guide to L.A.”. Sweet! It detailed all the raw restaurants in the city and surrounding areas. There was no way we could make it to them all, but we picked a few that looked yummy and off we went.

The first restaurant we tried out was Terra Bella Cafe. It’s a quaint little spot just a short walk from the beach…with a front patio full of flowers and greens and a warm interior decor.

The first thing I noticed here was the staff and how friendly they were. We were immediately greeted as “friends”…and they took a special interest in Bella … really making her feel like part of it all. The food here was TRULY amazing. It really was. I’ve been to a lot of raw restaurants, and most of the time, they all have the same taste profiles. But this one was different. The thai coconut soup…oh my. The burger…wow. The caramel roll…loving it.

We also had the chance to meet Melissa and her new head chef, as they were sitting at the bar talking while we were in there. She is a beautiful woman who clearly knows how to run a restaurant. I would go back again in a heartbeat! See all the photos here.

(Side note: Melissa is one of the executive chefs at the Raw Spirit Festival this year!)

Sara’s Personal Food Journal

I have been keeping a sort of “private” blog for a few months now…tracking what I am eating and how I feel. I’ve decided to make this blog public, for the simple reason that I know I love to read what other people are eating. It’s very inspiring for me, and I hope that my journal will inspire YOU and help you in your quest towards a healthier way of life.

I don’t update with any sort of regularity, just when I think about it. I might enter a bunch of days in a row and then not post for a few weeks or more. Lists of food just aren’t super exciting when it’s the same thing over and over πŸ™‚ This site is mostly just for your reference…because I know that a lot of people wonder, “…so what do those raw food people eat, anyway?!”. πŸ™‚

Sometimes I will include what Bella ate…sometimes what Matt ate. Most of the time, Matt and I are eating the same thing. If I have a deep thought for the day, I will include that as well. My goal is always to each as much raw food as possible, but I also allow myself to splurge on my favorite cooked foods once in awhile. I feel that this is the only way for me to stay raw in the long term. Life is too short to give up pad thai and the occasional soy caramel macchiato. πŸ™‚ I do try to stay vegan though.

Feel free to comment and/or leave questions and I will do my best to answer them.

Here you go!

Watermelon Salsa

Watermelon Salsa

We recently spent a fun evening at a friend’s house…eating, chatting, and playing games. Deea, the hostess (and one of my favorite people!), made this watermelon salsa for everyone. It’s so perfect for summer…and being that I am obsessed with watermelon, I had to post it! It’s perfect for those of you who don’t like tomatoes or perhaps can’t have them due to the acidity. Perfectly sweet and tart…and wonderful on flax chips or on top of a salad!

Thanks Deea for the photo and the recipe!

Watermelon Salsa
2 cups watermelon – diced
1 cups Nectarine – diced
Juice of one lime
1/4 cup cilantro – minced
2 jalepenos – diced (more or less depending on your spice tolerance!)
Sprinkle of salt
Turn gently together to mix flavors and chill one hour or longer.

Words to Eat By

"It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet." -Margaret Mead

"I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open and put them on cholesterol lowering drugs for the rest of their lives." - Dean Ornish, MD

β€œFinish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
